How Close Is San Luis Obispo to the Beach?

November 12, 2020

If you’re staying in San Luis Obispo, otherwise known as SLO, you’re basically on the beach. However, you probably want to know how far you’ll be from specific beaches as well as what each beach will offer.

Pismo Beach

The first place you want to visit is Pismo Beach, which is a 15-minute drive from the heart of SLO. This won’t be your average drive, as some of it will be along scenic Highway 1. When you get to the beach, you’ll have an opportunity to surf, kiteboard, paddleboard, go kayaking or horseback riding, fish off the pier, relax in the sand, and more.

Shell Beach

The “and more” can be explored if you choose to visit the Shell Beach area of Pismo Beach. This isn’t easy to do because Shell Beach is located in a residential neighborhood and can’t be found with GPS. When you do find it, you’ll see nine beaches hidden below the cliffs. Make sure to go at high tide so you have space to lounge on the beach. While you’re there, you might even see dolphins or whales. And if you want to see one of the most beautiful sunsets, you definitely want to be here in the evening. There’s also a little secret about Shell Beach: you can take a trail from Shell Beach to Pirate’s Cove, where you’ll find a clothing-optional beach.

Regardless of which beach you decide to visit, make sure to hit the downtown area when you’re done. You’ll find shops, premium outlets, craft breweries, and great spots for wine tasting. Also chow down on some famous clam chowder before you head back to your hotel. SLO visitors will be amazed at the eclectic mix of restaurants, vibrant hot spots, and unique shops they’ll find in downtown SLO.

San Simeon

If you’re willing to drive about 45 minutes, which is highly recommended, you can also experience San Simeon Point, Pier, and Cove off Highway 1. The drive will be relaxing thanks to the beautiful views. When you arrive, you’ll walk along a path on a bluff above the beach. From there, you can explore cove and rock formations. It’s also recommended that you take advantage of the 850-foot-long pier. And if you want to make a full day of it, bring some food because you’ll have access to grills and picnic tables at W. R. Hearst State Beach.

Fisherman’s Beach

Lastly, if you happen to be traveling with a dog, scamper over to Fisherman’s Beach, which is known as Dog Beach by the locals. Your dog can roam off leash here, enjoying just as much freedom and adventure as you do when you’re visiting San Luis Obispo.
